Leadership Moment — Syncing Up Your Calendar and Life Plan
Tuesday, January 3rd, 2012Relationships Take Time
Thursday, August 11th, 2011If you have ever struggled with your spouse, one of your kids, a parent, a friend, or a fellow teammate, you know how it can negatively impact the other areas of your life. Conversely, if you are doing exceptionally well in any of those relationships, you know how that overall feeling of goodness tends to spill over into the other areas of your life.
The depth and quality of our relationships directly impacts the overall quality of our lives. And we all know that deep, high-quality relationships take time.
The Power of Practice
Friday, July 1st, 2011Watch any sporting event and what you will see is the results of what took place with the athlete or team in the weeks and months in advance.
During the real performance, you will witness the results of what most will never see — the countless hours of training, reviewing game or play tapes, the disciplined working of the body and self-disciplined eating and sleeping.
And then, look at some of our countries best: our service men and women. Look at the countless hours they invest in training, preparing, rehearsing, and engaging in mock battles. They plan for and rehearse unlike any others.
Moments
Thursday, December 23rd, 2010I know that each of you will interpret that phrase a little differently, as you respond to the blessings and challenges you encountered in the past 51 weeks. Every one of us experienced a unique set of highs and lows as we made our journey through 2010.
And now, the 52nd week is upon us.
My challenge to you today is to intentionally carve out a few hours between now and New Year’s Eve to reflect on the special moments of the past year. Reflection in the pursuit of learning is a great discipline for acquiring wisdom.
You Don’t Have Time Not to Think
Friday, November 12th, 2010
In my last few months of coaching sessions and in my learning from great business leaders, a common topic is surfacing. This topic is that of thinking.
I see leaders who are not placing a high value on the discipline of thinking. Team members who don’t spend enough time thinking through a proposal or a possible strategy. Managers who are not taking time to think about the ramifications of a new launch or how to improve an old product or service.
Leading today is more challenging than in years past. There is more coming at us each and every second. We must be excellent at setting boundaries for ourselves or we can get sucked into the email or social networking vacuum.
