11 Tips for Intentional Living and Leading in Uncertain Times

Psy­chotic swings on Wall Street. Riots in the UK. Major coun­tries in finan­cial cri­sis, suf­fer­ing from polit­i­cal unrest, con­tin­ued unem­ploy­ment, and water short­ages. Polit­i­cal lead­ers who can’t see eye-to-eye on anything.

These are times of uncer­tainty. As I look back, I see that this is a mes­sage that I have deliv­ered more than once since August of 2007 when much of this began. Ear­lier this week, I addressed the topic again on our monthly Champion’s Edge Con­fer­ence Call, because I believe it’s a mes­sage we still need to hear.

Dif­fi­cult and uncer­tain times take their toll on us humans. When we live in this uncer­tainty for extended peri­ods, we can lose our way or lose per­spec­tive.

You’ve Got More to Give

I absolutely believe the Bib­li­cal truth that it is more blessed to give than to receive. And I think it is true for all of us!

The prob­lem is that many have lost per­spec­tive. It is easy for this to hap­pen when we have lost things such as love, friends, income, jobs, fam­ily norms…and the list goes on. We can eas­ily fall into the trap of think­ing about how to pro­tect our­selves rather than how we can help others.

So ask your­selves these ques­tions daily if you want to increase your lev­els of pas­sion, pur­pose and over­all fulfillment:

How to Fight the Gloom

Last Mon­day, Coach Steve Scan­lon and I had break­fast in a New York café and were dis­cussing our sched­ules for the upcom­ing week.  We both had on-site coach­ing ses­sions with either an indi­vid­ual CEO or with their teams, we had the World Busi­ness Forum com­ing up, and then Steve was off to work with another group in Oklahoma.

While we were eat­ing, Steve men­tioned that he is see­ing an increase in the num­ber of pro­fes­sion­als that are strug­gling to keep their minds out of the doom and gloom. He wanted to address this with the group he was going to speak to later in the week.

Keeping Your Perspective

We all fight bat­tles at some point in our lives and careers, and some of these strug­gles can last a long time. Lengthy bat­tles cause weari­ness. Over time, weari­ness erodes our con­fi­dence. When we lose con­fi­dence, we can eas­ily lose our perspective.

When a leader loses per­spec­tive for too long, it can be terminal.

So what should one do who finds them­selves tired, fear­ful, and con­fused? Here are 5 sug­ges­tions for those of you who might be trapped in this very uncom­fort­able place right now.
