This topic is front and cen­ter for me right now as the CEO of Build­ing Cham­pi­ons. I know that we must be very inten­tional with how we tap into and develop those that are on the team. Too many man­agers are sorely mis­taken when they say they don’t have time for monthly one on ones with their direct reports. Every­thing you read and hear from the most suc­cess­ful CEO’s and the most respected lead­er­ship author­i­ties tell us that devel­op­ing our future lead­ers is one of our most crit­i­cal func­tions as lead­ers — and I agree.

So, if devel­op­ing our future lead­ers is so impor­tant, why have so many man­agers failed to make this a non-negotiable discipline?

This week, I had the priv­i­lege of work­ing with 16 busi­ness lead­ers as we hosted our Build­ing Cham­pi­ons CEO Round­table. The key mes­sage I shared with these lead­ers was drawn from coach­ing ses­sions and lead­er­ship events that I have par­tic­i­pated in over the last 90 days.

I share this mes­sage with you today because I am observ­ing too many lead­ers oper­at­ing from their heels — in reac­tive mode — instead of proac­tively on the balls of their feet.

Elevated Thinking

Our think­ing impacts our beliefs.

Our beliefs impact our decisions.

Our deci­sions impact our actions.

Our actions impact our results.

Our results impact our impact!

Most of us want to pos­i­tively impact our spouses, kids, team­mates, clients, and part­ners. If we don’t value the dis­ci­pline of think­ing, we are at risk of lim­it­ing the impact we can make in all areas of our lives.

Today, I had the priv­i­lege of speak­ing to a group of top per­form­ing pro­fes­sion­als about how we must con­tin­u­ally ele­vate our think­ing. As I said in my post “You Don’t Have Time Not to Think,” too many busi­ness lead­ers have not placed a high enough value on thinking.
