Radically Impact Your Career and Life with 3 Plans!
Last week I wrote about the need for leaders to take the time to Reflect. To assess where we are in comparison to our plans. To assess how we are leading, thinking about and making decisions in light of our current business and life circumstances. I shared that we so believe in our need to Reflect, Plan and Connect that we created the Building Champions Experience to help attendees with this.
Today is all about the plans that make reflecting and thinking so much more productive. If you are like the majority of our clients, your challenge is not coming up with more good things to advance your careers and improve your lives. Your challenge is how to identify the good things that you should no longer be doing so that you can invest more time and energy into the great things that will enable you to enjoy more success in all aspects of your life.
At Building Champions, we have what we call the Core Four Success Puzzle. What we’ve found is that the first three elements are incredibly effective in helping leaders improve their thinking and decision making. Let me give you a brief overview of how each plan works.
- Your Life Plan — This is a plan will help you be crystal clear on your true priorities and, therefore, the specific actions and behaviors that are most important to you. This plan will improve how you make decisions and ultimately how you live. The better you live, the better you lead.
- Your Business Vision — This is the foundational strategic plan that all business plans should be born out of. When done well, it shows you and your teammates what you belong to, who you will become and what you will build. It should be compelling enough to engage your hearts and clear enough for your minds to create plans from.
- Your Business Plan — This plan is a personal business plan for you — not the entire organization. We coach clients to make this fit on one sheet of paper to ensure maximum effectiveness in implementation. This is a 90-day plan with three components: outcomes, non-negotiable disciplines and improvements. Once complete, you will know how to measure success, what actions or disciplines will fill your calendar and what specific projects you should work on and execute.
This week, I recommend that you pick one of the above plans to create or revise. Pick a day to work on that plan alone and work until it is complete. The Life Plan and Business Vision will usually take a someone a full day to do with excellence. The Business Plan can usually be done well in less than two hours. If you already have your three plans, then your Action Plan is to commit to reviewing them every Sunday night or Monday morning to remind yourself of where you are heading and what is most important.
For most of you, it is not the shortage of great strategies, skills or knowledge that limits your performance or impedes your quality of life, it is the lack of clarity and confidence to repeat the truly great disciplines with the right attitudes day in and day out. These three plans will influence and guide all of the little decisions we make day in and day out that ultimately tell the story of our careers and lives.
