How Little I Know

December 2nd, 2011

I have really enjoyed this year. It has not come without its trials and challenges but the blessings have so outweighed any of the difficulties. There is just so much to be grateful for.

Now this may come as a surprise, but one of the things that I am most grateful for is a deeper awareness of just how little I know. If I leave it at this, many of you might be somewhat concerned. After all, you invest time in this blog looking for insights — not the ramblings of someone who knows nothing.

But this awareness of how little I know has been really freeing and exciting. The truth of the matter is that I am most likely more than halfway through this journey called life, and I still feel like so much of it is an experiment.

It’s a Matter of Perspective

November 23rd, 2011

Sadness, sympathy and gratitude were the three very real emotions that were swirling inside of me as the Delta pilot made the following announcement.

“Ladies and gentleman, please remain seated as we approach the gate. We have a soldier on board who is accompanying one of our fallen soldiers home to his family. He will deplane first so he can meet our hero’s family as they unload him from the bottom of the plane. Please join us in a moment of silence or prayer if you are inclined as we honor them.”

Then a well-decorated soldier stood up, dressed in his finest blue uniform, decorated with dozens of medals, badges and stripes and he looked at all of us as he waited for them to open the plane door. Complete silence followed. I could not stop staring at his face, his stern and stoic eyes. I could not imagine what his next few moments would feel like as he met this fallen soldier’s family. Would his parents be there waiting, maybe a wife and children? Sure they knew of the risks and the dangers that are present when any join the armed forces, but did they ever think this would happen to them? I prayed for immense comfort and peace for this grieving family and the brave soldier who accompanied his fellow warrior.

Here are a few possible Action Plans that can help you gain a better perspective as we enter this Thanksgiving week ahead.

The Right Solutions

Coach Steve Scanlon and I recently facilitated a leadership conference for a great national, long-time partner of ours. The desired end result for this conference was that all managers would connect with one another, get clarity on what the current reality looked like (both for their company and industry) and reconnect with the company’s vision. Then, the front line managers would create new strategies to bridge the gap from their current reality to what they see for themselves in the future. This would be no small feat!

Well I am happy to report that the leaders of this firm stated this was by far, the best leadership event they had ever had. Bullseye! Here is what took place that created the magic for this company.
